Restoration of a 19th-Century American Victorian Bookcase

This remarkable walnut bookcase, featuring eight doors and a fold-down writing surface, is a prime example of 19th-century American Victorian-style antiques, likely built in the 1860s.

Originally purchased by our client’s grandfather in 1916 in Boston, MA, it was used to store the tools of his trade as a master yeast maker. Unlike many Victorian-era furniture pieces that were mass-produced, this bookcase displays clear signs of careful handcraftsmanship.

Over the course of three months, we carefully selected walnut and other high-quality materials to bring it back to life. What began as a piece in severe disrepair was transformed into a stunning family heirloom, ready to be cherished for generations to come.

This project held deep meaning for our clients, who entrusted us with full artistic license to restore it to its original glory. The result is not just a beautifully restored bookcase but a tangible connection to their family’s history.

When asked if I recommend investing in restoration, I always offer three main reasons: sentimental value, lower cost compared to new construction, and practical use with a place in the home to display it.
